It turns out that several random body parts change in size during pregnancy. Some you know about, because everybody talks about them (boobs get bigger, bladder gets smaller) and others, well, nobody tells you about them. I had noticed over the weekend (and a bit before that) that I have been congested recently. I had no other cold or allergy symptoms, so I didn’t know what to blame. I figured that maybe I have been cleaning too much and therefore kicking up too much dust. But I didn’t think much of it. Then I read in one of my pregnancy books that your mucous membranes swell during pregnancy (isn’t that a lovely thought). Thus, you produce more snot and are more congested. Of course, the book didn’t go into why this happens. I am going to have to look it up in one of my other books.
Here is where I get a bit personal. Last night, well, my shrunken bladder and my enhanced snot factories lead to a bad combination for sustained sleep. I got out of bed several times to pee. The first time was around 2 (when Hubby-poo was in the bathroom finally washing up and getting ready for bed, so I probably heard the water in my dreams and it triggered my peeflex). Every time I woke up to pee, I felt a tad stuffy and thus had to blow my nose. And it wasn’t a simple one-and-done sort of thing. Oh no, it was like I would awaken the beast each time. One little blow and it was like the flood gates opened up. Every time.
The last time, around 4:30 / 5:00, it got crazy. It turned into a whole sneezing / sniffling symphony. Hubby-poo woke up – and bless his heart he kept on asking what he could do for me (I guess he can’t get too upset, he’s the one who put me in this position after all, but I still appreciate that he doesn’t get cranky at me). Sadly, there was nothing! I can’t take many decongestants, and what I can take would knock me out, and getting knocked out that close to my alarm is just setting myself up for disaster.
I finally got out of bed at 5:45 and got in the shower. It sucked to get up so much earlier than the sun, but I couldn’t just stay in bed. And I was hoping that Hubby-poo could get at least a bit of sleep before he had to wake up. The good part was that I got to enjoy a hot breakfast and a cup of Earl Gray tea, and even had time to watch a bit of news and wear panty hose AND put on make-up. So at least I look good today, despite being exhausted :-P.

I highly recommend sleeping with a good humidifier or even a vaporizer (and baby vick's vap-o-rub). They've helped me with the congestion... for some reason mine happens only in my left nostril. So weird.
