8w2d - It's NOT Peanut Butter Jelly Time!

I rolled out of bed around 9:30 this morning (ah, holiday weekends with no obligations!). About an hour later, Acorn was hungry. I went to make some whole wheat toast, to which Acorn responded, 'No, Mommy, I want peanut butter and jelly!' Okay, this was a new request. I thought I would oblige. So I made a nice sandwich of peanut butter and grape jelly on whole wheat bread, poured a glass of milk, and proceeded to get comfy on the couch and eat my breakfast.

Yeah, it turns out that Acorn doesn't actually like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches - or at least didn't want it today. About 4 hours later and I still feel queasy. I am force-feeding myself some organic raspberry yogurt and drinking some ginger ale, in the hopes that it settles the unrest.

And I am crossing my fingers!

8w0d - Happy Thanksgiving

Acorn, it's your first Thanksgiving. And we couldn't be more thankful to have you in our lives. You have been with us for somewhere around 6 weeks, and they have been an amazing 6 weeks. Thank you for being here with us. I love you!

7w5d - Fake drinking

Hiding pregnancy is hard. I am not a big drinker, not by any means. But I do drink. Obviously I have stopped drinking with the pregnancy. Which means that the people I spend the most time with might notice that I am not drinking at all.

It would be fine, as it is pretty easy to make excuses for the most part (I'm on antibiotics / allergy medicine / etc., I have to get up early, I am trying to lose a few pounds, etc.). But this past weekend was my birthday, which meant that none of my regular excuses would work. In preparation for the fact that I wanted to be able to hide my drinking, I threw a party at home. That way nobody could go and just buy me shots. But people still expected some participation.

Luckily, I am a very creative person. I made a mocktail of flavored seltzer, a splash of cranberry juice and a lime. It was a pretty, pink drink with a bright green accent. Everybody thought it was a cocktail - I even had a few people comment on how fun it looked. Some asked me what was in it and asked me to make one for them. Of course, I told them there was vodka in it (and put vodka in the ones I made).

The other lucky thing is that I was really, really sleep-deprived. And when I get sleep-deprived, I get silly. Almost as though I am drunk. Hubby-poo told me that everybody thought I was tipsy. So it worked :-P.

Of course, in a bit over a month when we start telling people what's going on, they are going to be concerned that I got drunk on my birthday. I guess I will have to tell them about my acting skills.

5w6d - Food

Food is so funny right now. I don't want to eat much of it, that's for sure. And what I do want to eat is strange. Well, I guess it's not that strange, I only want to eat my favorite foods. It's just that my favorite, most comforting foods are, well, kind of strange. For example, I really like tortillas in general. So now they are all I want to eat. I dip them in sour cream, or spread them with cream cheese and chipotle tabasco sauce. It's weird. I am also digging crispy chicken tenders and tuna salad. So much for eating healthy :-P.

I am feeling a bit queasy now. I don't know if it's the strange food or general Acorn stuff or whatever, but I have some serious icky tummy!

5w5d - ***YAWN***

Making a baby is tiring! It is also apparently bad for sleep. I am also on day 11 of this cold from hell. It’s pretty horrible. It is now bronchitis. I have some baby-safe anti-biotics. I am not looking forward to taking them, but I am looking forward to not being sick anymore so I can actually enjoy this pregnancy. I got to enjoy it for about 4-5 days before this cold knocked me out!

This cold is funny, because being pregnant is making it different than any cold I have ever had. First of all, coughing is strange. It makes my lower abdominal area feel a bit funny. Also, sometimes it makes me, well, sick. My doctor tells me that this is pretty normal – being pregnant can really make your gag reflex more sensitive. So a bit of coughing can make for some unpleasant, surprising results. Without the warning of nausea, well, you get the picture.
But there is some nausea, although not in the morning really, so I am not sure if it is pregnancy or cold related. Sure, I don’t normally get nauseous with a cold. But it’s not unreasonable to think that all the phlegm I might be swallowing (another pleasant thought) could be causing it. It’s also possible (and quite probable) that it’s Acorn doing it to me. Eh, I don’t mind.

I also seem to be having sleep issues. I fall asleep just fine. Last night I started dozing on the couch at a bit after 9, and Hubby-poo tucked me into bed by about 9:20 or so. And I passed out. But I then woke up at around 2 a.m. and was in and out of sleep until the first alarm went off. Of course, I passed out between the alarms, so when the second went off I was groggy and confused. I had a similar experience the night before, where I went to bed at nearly 2 a.m. (that’s what time I was finally done enjoying my new and improved gag reflex) and woke again around 5. I played the in-and-out game until about 6:15 when Hubby-poo’s alarm went off. He finally woke me for real around 7.

As a sidebar – if I seem like I might be complaining about this pregnancy, I can promise you that I am NOT. It took me no time to get pregnant, and I was very, very fortunate. And I know how fortunate I am. I will take every bit of insomnia, every bit of nausea, every bit of exhaustion, etc. I appreciate this pregnancy very, very much and I am so excited to get to meet Acorn in July that I don’t care what I need to go through to get there.

5w0d - Ugh... MEAT!

It turns out that red meat is a problem for me. I tried some leftover bison NY strip steak last night. It just tasted... so... meaty. It even smelled meaty. I took a few bites, and then I had to hide the rest in a tortilla with winter squash. It still wasn't good. Okay, the tortilla was good. The rest was gross.

Tonight all I could muster the desire to eat was a salad. Mike made some leftover meat, and the smell just got to me. It made me so sick to my stomach. I still ate my salad, but it was hard.

This first trimester is going to be interesting...

4w4d - **Cough** **Cough**

Okay, being pregnant is hard.

On Saturday night I started coming down with a cold. Normally, when I feel that first twinge of a cold, I reach for the NyQuil. On a Saturday night I am inclined to take a mega-dose and just knock it out of my system. This past Saturday? I popped a Benadryl for the congestion and a Tylenol for the aches. That was all I could do! Yesterday I spent the day feeling miserable, popping cough drops and not much else. There is so much conflicting information on the web that I didn’t know what or who to trust. So I just didn’t take anything! It sucked.

Today I spoke with the doctor and she told me that I could take Robitussen and Tylenol Cold. And that cough drops are okay. But that’s all! I usually buy those all-in sort of medicines, so I’ll have to buy the basic ones.

The other thing that was hard was that I went out for sushi for a friend’s birthday. I *love* sushi! Of course, when there is a bun in the oven, there is no raw food. Luckily this place had several cooked rolls, so I was able to eat there without feeling too deprived. And they were also kind enough to put a * by each roll / dish with raw food in it, so it was really easy to choose something appropriate. Still, though, I think that I am going to have sushi for my first post-delivery meal.
