Two week progress report

We took Jocelyn in for her two week appointment - 2 days early. Let's start with the stats:

Weight: 9 lbs., 8 oz. - 75%
Length: 22" - 75%
Head: 14 1/2" - 25%

My baby is growing big and strong, and has nearly regained her birth weight. Huzzah!

She was an absolute champ during the entire appointment. She whimpered a little bit when the doctor listened to her breathing, but that was all. She was so well behaved! If she was a year or so older, she would have earned herself a stop at the ice cream shop for her good behavior!

I did ask her about nursing schedules. While Jocelyn is a bit too young to be on a super-regimented schedule, I knew it was probably not good to feed her too often. Sometimes she wants to eat an hour after she started her last meal! While talking to the doctor, Jocelyn started diving for my boobs - she sort of does a chicken-peck thing at the outside of my shirt. So I asked the doctor about it. I told her that my last feeding started at noon, and that it was about 1:20 at the time we were talking to her, so what should we do when starts diving for my boobs. She said to let her dive, but don't feed her until we're in the 2-3 hour window since the start of her last feeding. It's better for my milk production. It's better for Jocelyn's nutrition (the milk will be more nutritious, and she will have deeper feedings if she waits a bit longer and eats a bit more). It's better for my sanity. So I'm going to have to toughen up a bit and not just indulge her.

It was also time for her round two newborn screen. We had to do one at the hospital. I don't know why they needed a second one, but they did. So back to the hospital it was, for them to prick her foot and take some more blood to do thyroid screening and whatnot. My little trouper was SO brave. Yes, she cried her little head off with the initial prick, and then gave a small wail with each squeeze, but overall she was pretty quiet about it. And as soon as it was over, a cuddle with Mama was all she needed to make it better. Not so much for Mama, let me tell you. Yeah, there may have been a few tears on my end! What can I say? I can't stand to see my baby suffer.

As a side note, I really like this new pediatrician. She's around my age and also pregnant, so I feel like she can really share my concerns. She took the time to explain things to me without making jokes about my baby. She's really nice and I felt comfortable asking her questions.

So now I am practicing the resisting feeding. We are trying to get her down to sleep - have been for about an hour now - and it's just not sticking. So now we're in an awkward spot of her needing to eat soon, but not yet. She was dive bombing my boobs again when I was trying to put her down, which made it really hard (and made me feel really cruel). Now Dad and Grandma are taking a turn (and it's pretty quiet right now, so it must be working :-).
